Paul was born in Manchester in 1943, the only son of variety artists, living in a caravan, touring the country and attending over 10 different schools. After several various jobs, he joined the Royal Air Force in 1961.
He began his broadcasting career overseas with The Aden Forces Broadcasting Association. In 1966 he left the RAF to become a Pirate DJ with Radio 270 ending up as Station Manager before leaving in 1967 to present the breakfast show on Manx Radio, (Britain’s only legal commercial radio station at that time).
Later that year he was invited to join Radio Luxembourg where he stayed for 7 years presenting the Radio Luxembourg Top 20 Show. In 1974 joined national Radio One and presented the daily lunchtime show for almost 7 years.
Paul then hosted the Breakfast Show on Pennine Radio for 18 months before moving on to become part of the all-star line up on the hugely successful Capital Gold presenting the lunchtime spot, also co-hosting ‘The Oldies Party’ - a transatlantic show with the legendary ‘Cousin Brucie’ of WCBS New York, (the first use of ISDN).
Paul also co-presented and wrote for the multi- award winning “Brunch”, (a satire show featuring Angus Deaton, Jan Raven, Josie Lawrence to name but a few…) From 1974 to 2001 Paul presented the weekly BBC World Service Vintage Chart Show.
In 1983 Paul hosted one of the earliest National TV property shows from Grampian TV. Then, i n 1978, with Sacha Distell, he co-hosted ‘Miss World’ resulting in a nomination for best newcomer to television by the Television Writers Guild.
Paul also made the hit list in 1976 when he recorded “Convoy GB” with Dave Lee Travis which made No. 4 in the National Charts and reached No. 1 in the Luxembourg Charts. Some years later had a solo hit with ‘R.A.M.B.O.’ under the name The P.B.Squad’
At this time, Paul became a regular presenter of “Top of the Pops” and made several guest appearances on Thames T.V.’s “Who’s Baby”. By 1994 Paul won a silver medal in the New York Radio Awards, and a gold in the British Radio Awards for Best Station ID’s.
Then in 1994 Paul joined the GWR Classic Gold network,(28 stations country-wide), presenting the lunchtime show. During this time he hosted many broadcasts live from the USA…(Tennessee, Arizona, California, Georgia and Florida), and, in 1996 covered the opening of EuroDisney live from Paris.
Paul's career moved forward again in October 2003 when he participated in Qatar-Britain Friendship Festival Week in Doha as a guest of the British Embassy, before finally settling in with us right here, broadcasting daily on KCFM in Hull and East Yorkshire.
Away from radio, Paul married in 1969 to Luxembourg born Nicole. They have two sons, Darren and Philip. Paul’s other passions are classic cars and he the proud owner of a 1953 Studebaker Starliner.
