Biography
Clarky was born in Beverley and went to school locally in Market Weighton, where his passion for sport and the media first came to light. At 14 he was already working on newspapers, magazines and of course community and hospital radio. His love for sport didn't stop there though, after playing both football and cricket, as well as establishing a junior football team, he then went on to work at a local golf club and manage a sports centre.
Nevertheless, over time it became pretty clear that he should give up chasing the dream of being involved in sport and instead spend the rest of his time talking about!
Spells commentating on Hull City and Leeds United soon came around as well as providing online Premier League commentaries for The Sun and Ladbrokes. He also has experience with BBC Radio Leeds, Independent Radio News and PennineFM, as well as spells as PA Announcer at Scarborough Cricket Club, MC at a host of sporting dinners and completing a BA(Hons) Degree in Media and Sports Journalism. The hard work really does pay off!
He joined KCFM shortly after its launch in 2007, covering an array of different sports shows plus a host of music shows along the way and since his time with the station he has done everything from broadcasting from the hallowed turf at Wembley to finding himself on stage in front of thousands of music fans at KCFM’s popular ‘Back to the 80’s’ concert.
Clarky has now become one of the big voices of KCFM’s sports output presenting Hull FC Live and Hull City Live programmes as well as the popular Airlie Night show. On top of that, he is a regular covering some of the music slots in the KCFM programme schedule and can be heard every Sunday morning with his show, accompanying you from the Sunday morning lie in right through to Sunday lunch, including superb music , great giveaways and a few laughs along the way!
Birthday:
4th August
Birthplace:
Beverley
Favourite song:
There's just too many! Anything from Abba to The Zutons, including Elton John, Travis and KC and the Sunshine band in between!
Favourite films:
Again, just too many, but big fan of 'Jingle All the Way' at Christmas, 'Gone in 60 Seconds' and anything with Adam Sandler! But doesn't everyone!
What's your most embarrassing moment on air?
Really don't want to go back there, but let's just say, my wireless microphone on an OB got a little confused with the microphone in the neighbouring church. And yes, it was a Sunday!
What's your worst hairstyle?
I've never been the coolest. Just dugout a picture of me as a youngster with a 'wedge'! Cool!
Which is your song at karaoke?
I'll just do anything; I’m always the one that is first up as well as ending the night on karaoke and most of the time that is not under the influence of a few drinks! I murdered Leo Sayer at the KCFM Christmas party, but I can do a decent Mack the Knife!
How do you like to spend your weekends?
I don't really have them, it's part of the job! But when I do, I try and make the most of a day off having some down time and catching up with friends and family as you don’t get to see them that often. Having said that, some might say that is a good thing!
What's your perfect night out?
With the mates, decent restaurant, good food, plenty of laughs all followed by a few beers down the pub!
What would go in your Room 101?
Day-time television, people who don't understand sport but still talk to you about it, caravans, car insurance and the bloke from the car insurance ad!
Most annoying habit?
I'd ask everyone else, they would give a more honest assessment!
If you weren't a radio presenter what would you do?
It would definitely still be in the media or entertainment world, I just love it! Comedy and stage work has always attracted me, but I suppose like many of us, my dream job would be to actually have the ability to be a pro sportsman....but I will have to keep dreaming!!
