The Health Protection Agency says it's seen an unprecedented rise in whooping cough cases in East Yorkshire.

So far this year fifty five people have contracted the infection in our area, that's compared with just one case in 2008.

Dr Simon Padfield from the Health Protection Agency says:

"Children are particuarly affected by the infection and routine immunisation is essential. Immunising children at two, three and four months old and then before they start school means that we've had far fewer cases. In previous years this would have been an age group where we would have had a lot more severe illness".
