The defence giant was fined £250,000 and ordered to pay almost £98,000 in costs over the death of Gary Whiting.

BAE Systems has been fined 250,000 pounds and ordered to pay nearly £98,000 in costs over the death of an East Yorkshire worker.

BAE Operations Limited previously admitted health and safety breaches led to the engineer's death.

Gary's nephew Lee Whiting read a statement on behalf of the family at Hull Crown Court. He says:

"The machine Gary was working in had been turned on with people in it before and it was pure luck no-one was killed in the machine before Gary. If a couple of hundred pounds had been spent on a safety feature, it would have saved Gary's life".

Hull parents to be fined for term-time holidays

Parents in Hull who take their children on holiday during term time will face an automatic fine under new measures being introduced by Hull City Council.

From September, headteachers will no longer have the
ability to authorise up to two weeks a year "authorised absence" during school
months.

Sue Yardley, Behaviour and Attendance Lead for Hull City Council told KCFM that the new rules make it fairer for both teachers and parents:

"The fact there was this discretionary period meant some headteachers would authorise absence when perhaps they shouldn't have done.

"You may get a fine for a child at one school and not at another school, so this hopefully makes it clearer for headteachers, and makes it much easier for them to make the difficult decision to refer a parent for a penalty notice.

"Now, unless it falls into an exceptional circumstance, all parents can expect to be fined.

"If a child has 10 unauthorised absences- five or six days off school- they'll be classed as a persistent absentee. It makes it really hard for them to catch up on the work they've missed."

OFSTED investigates "less than good" schools in the East Riding

OFSTED have rated 35% of schools in East Riding as "less than good"- higher than the regional and national average.

Teams of inspectors have
today begun a week of inspections to find out why the district has a
disproportionate number of under-performing schools – and whether the picture is
improving.

OFSTED's regional director for the North East, Nick
Hudson told KCFM what they hope to achieve:

"What we want to ensure is that the children in those schools continue to receive the best education they possibly can, and that the chances of children attending 'good' or 'outstanding' schools in the East Riding improves.

"Parents should be reassured that we're taking this seriously. We're doing the inspection work to try to ascertain whether or not there are any significant issues.

"If there are, we will follow them up."

Hull switches to fortnightly bin collections

Fortnightly black bin collections come into force in Hull from today.

Hull City Council says the move from weekly collections
of non-recyclable waste will help save around a million pounds a
year.

Councillor Martin Mancey told KCFM he hopes it will help
increase recycling rates in the city:

"The council will end up paying around £4.2million in landfill tax to the Government for all the waste that is not recycled. So there's a big financial saving in landfill tax, but also a real benefit to the environment.

"Whilst there will inevitably be a small number of people who will find this transition difficult, I'm confident the vast majority of the population won't have a problem.

"Any resident who wants additional recycling bins, we will provide them free of charge."

The Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin met Hull

"There's an envelope for this funding for this, which is around £161million.

Police are submitting a case the Crown Prosecution
Service to see whether there is enough evidence to bring charges against
them.

Senior Investigating Officer Colin Andrews says it's
been a difficult process:

"It's been a long and complex investigation, and gathering evidence of this kind is not easy from people who've suffered great trauma.

"Many of these victims now live throughout the country, so we've had to travel to gather evidence.

"It's been very traumatic, and brought back some terrible memories for them. But for some of the victims, they're glad the matter is being investigated."

Police review matchday security after Hull City's promotion

The Chief Constable of Humberside Police says Hull City's promotion to the Premiership will alter the way they police matches.

Justine Curran, who oversaw football matches while working in Manchester and Liverpool, told KCFM that hosting top flight football in
the city poses new challenges for the force:

"There will be alliances and there will be groups you can't put possibly together.

"It might bring new challenges, it might actually reduce challenges because fans of Premiership clubs are used to being policed in a certain way.

"That will give us a challenge to make sure we fit in with the most effective way of doing things.

"But the important thing for us is to look at it and decide what's the best way to keep everyone safe and happy."

More foster carers needed in the East Riding

East Riding of Yorkshire Council is looking to recruit new carers during National Foster Care Fortnight.

There are currently about 180 children in foster care
in our area, and the council is looking to recruit around 20 more
households.

KCFM spoke to 17-year old Victoria, who was taken into care when she was 14. She said her foster parents have changed her life:

"I was in my first year of GCSEs when I came into care and I was failing them all.

"Once I moved in with my foster carers, they pushed me and pushed me. I passed them all and got into sixth form.

"I can't describe what they've done, I can't thank them enough and there are no words to thank them enough.

"If you've got love in you and you're thinking about fostering, don't keep thinking about it- just do it.

"Yeah it's challenging, but it's one of the best things you can do for a young person or a child."

New owner wants to keep the Arc in Hull

Property developer Terry Hodgkinson says he ideally wants the Arc to stay in the city.

The unique landmark was sold at auction on Wednesday
for £21,000, but could be moved elsewhere.

Mr Hodgkinson, who hopes to restore the exhibition centre to its former glory, told KCFM he has received a lot of support from people in Hull:

"I've had loads of emails, and you can hear the sigh of relief. It's a bit like the Angel of the North- it split the council in two when it was first built, but now it's everybody's favourite.

"It's a very interesting architectural statement that's been an icon of Hull for six or seven years, and it'd be a shame to see it go out of the city.

"I hope someone might like to use it as their exhibition centre. Perhaps it could be Siemens."

A 2-2 draw against Cardiff was enough to secure their place in the top flight, after Watford lost 2-1 to Leeds United.

Manager Steve Bruce says it all felt unreal:

"We've had so many chances to put it to bed and a penalty for us in the last minute and we miss it and then they go down the other end and score, it's just absolutely and totally ridiculous".

Steve Bruce says he's never seen anything like the dramatic afternoon that saw Hull City promoted to the Premier League.

On Tigers Player, the manager says it's his biggest acheievement in all his years of football:

"We were 66 to 1 outsiders at the start, nobody gave us a hope. I had a few people ringing me saying what are you going to Hull for, and eleven months later, I'm absolutely delighted".

Defender Paul McShane says it's a huge relief to get back into the top division:

"We really made hard work of it in the end because we were six points clear at one stage, it was a great practical joke we all played. Saved it 'til the last day and now we're up and that's all that matters".

Former Hull City player Ian Ashbee was in the team when the Tigers last got promoted to the Premier League in 2008. He says:

"To get promoted again is massive and a fantastic achievement, everything's all just come together at once and the hard work starts now.
