About Gateway
Gateway is one of nine housing market renewal Pathfinders established by the government in 2002 to turn around neighbourhoods so that people will want to live and work in these areas once again and communities can remain together. Gateway is set to deliver an ambitious £500 million programme to revitalise the city's housing market over the next 10-15 years.
Where is Gateway working?
The first priority areas identified for housing market renewal action are: Newington and St. Andrew's in West Hull and Ings and Preston Road in East Hull.
Gateway has already made significant progress in the city, with 150 new homes in East Hull completed or on site and 500 refurbished homes in Newington and St Andrew's refurbished or on site. Work is expected to start on the first new homes at Woodcock Street in Spring 2008.
Over the next 10 years, Gateway aims to:
- Build modern, energy efficient homes
- Refurbish existing homes
- Demolish poor quality housing that does not meet modern day needs
- Improve areas of green space and community safety
- Help to lower levels of crime and anti social behaviour and create neighbourhoods where people choose to live
PROGRESS UPDATE
Formal consultation on an ambitious £300 million plan to transform the Newington and St Andrew’s area of West Hull will begin on Thursday February 21.
Councillors gave the plans the green light last week, following a series of events, a meeting and workshops last year, which gave the residents the chance to shape the future of their community. Over 500 people attended the events to decide how Newington and St Andrew’s could be transformed over the next 10-15 years.
The ambitious plans include:
• over 2,000 new homes;
• transformed and new green spaces and tree lined streets;
• pedestrian friendly and tree-lined streets;
• a new urban square on Anlaby Road;
• frontage improvements to 2,000 homes;
• demolition of around 2,000 properties to make way for new developments and open spaces;
• new community facilities at Massey Street Playing Fields and on Hessle Road;
• environmental and shop front improvements to Hessle Road.
This legally required consultation is the first step towards developing an Area Action Plan for Newington and St Andrew’s, which can then be adopted as part of the Hull Development Framework. The six week consultation will begin at noon on February 21, 2008 and will run until noon on April 3, 2008.
